Old Ferguson Makes New Commitments

Flickr/creative commons

VenusPlusX's unique mix, what we mean by The New Age of Sexual Freedom, is aimed at solutions to change the state of our country, our world, through the removal of all obstacles such as racism, sexism, the worst of nationalism, and all the other "isms," that stand in the way of Peace, universal pluralism based on love. (Our Mission, our Manifesto.) In this context, we have written all week about the shooting of young Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, his legacy and his family's continuing legacy, a lightening strike heard around the world that has forever changed ...

Follow The Money To Ferguson

Light Brigading August 14, 2014 Flickr/creative commons

No doubt I will have more to say about the events still unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri, because the underlying factors are key issues for VenusPlusX. For now, we're are pointing you to Mass Incarceration: Follow The Money (Part 1 and Part 2), a 2012 analysis and op-ed we produced following the publication of Michelle Alexander's scholarly and myth-shattering book, The New Jim Crow, well worth a full read and understanding for anyone committed to systemic change in this country. It answers the question, "Why?" Institutionalized racism, money, greed, and special interests are what makes brown and black ...

NetrootsNation 2016 Wraps Up

IMG_2390

Reminder to everyone that this year and every year, Netroots Nation offers all of the keynote addresses and various workshops, via lifestream and video, for progressives who are unable to attend. I was lucky enough to be here all week, starting with the pre-conference NetrootsConnect LGBT. St. Louis is a troubled city trying to do better in a purple state. It struck me as a very southern city, in pace and overripe hospitality, but with a clearly liberal bent. All of the conference hotels were unionized. Here are some highlights with lots of links to full session videos. Thursday's opening plenary was revolutionary, a ...

Scared of Their Own Shadow: The Inherent Paranoia of Anti-Government Militias

By Mike Licht

If any more proof was needed to show the distortion of the Second Amendment, a listen to this broadcast over the weekend discussing the schisms among the Oath Keepers, following their crazy foray in Ferguson, will do the trick. https://youtu.be/aTZ48xSvASs Militias and those militant about their subjective view of the Second Amendment are by nature anti-government. They presume to elevate their personal paranoia to DefCon4, and pay no attention to the facts on the ground that might interfere with their own narcissism. Just this past weekend, about 3,000 Teapartiers and Oath Keepers rallied to secede from New York state, ...

Beyond Headlines and Hashtags

White supremacy is so imbedded in our culture that police will not confront armed citizens inciting fear and hatred in an already agitated local populace. (AG 8/11/15)

Someone said she thought my headline on Tuesday, White Supremacy Reigns, may not appeal to Facebook users because it could suggest endorsement rather than my intended condemnation of the Oath Keepers in Ferguson. I did promise to update that post, though. The headline was an obvious declaration of what was transpiring in Ferguson, raising the alarm about the arrival of the mostly-entirely-white Oath Keepers, an armed, anti-government militia, carrying loaded guns and rifles, ...

White Supremacy Reigns

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 3.34.26 PM

"Open carry is open carry," said a member of Oath Keepers defending his right to be armed among Ferguson protesters.

Radical, self-titled, armed Oath Keepers have descended on Ferguson, Missouri, following unrest there upon the one-year anniversary of the killing Michael Brown. This fringe "patriot" group abides by its vow to disobey "unconstitutional" orders from what they view as an increasingly tyrannical government. What makes this so extraordinary and difficult to grasp is the reaction of the police to this invasion by 2nd Amendment fanatics: nada, nothing. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar described their presence as ...

A Lightening Strike Heard Around The World

"Not everything that is faced can be chaged; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." — James Baldwin (1924 – 1987) American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic

Meditation this weekend on Michael Brown and the birth of the BlackLivesMatter movement led me to re-examine my published thoughts from a year ago.

Follow The Money To Ferguson Institutionalized racism, money, greed, and special interests are what makes brown and black young men primary targets and victims, and it is being financed by your hard-earned tax-dollars. (More . . .)

Part 2: Take Heart, Evidence Pouring In Hourly

Flickr/creative commons

Yesterday, I revisited my pre-election theory that progressives and all non-Republicans will see the greater good of a Republican takeover of the Senate and their increased footprint in the House. And I promised to riff on a few memes to substantiate that soon after. (Part 1 here.) There's nothing to fear since these election results are actually bringing about the best time in history to put these special interest jokers on full display and in sharper relief so that everyone, at least more and more people, can see them for who they really are and then ...

Everyone Needs Examples, Including Bad Examples

by Pranav Bhatt Flickr/creative commons

When we wrote, where Where Did All This F*cking Evil Sh%t Come From? and recently, Right-wingnuts Bless Progressives, and in other posts, including practically everything we've written about the events in Ferguson, Missouri, it was to offer a rational explanation of why we are faced, constantly bombarded, with negativity, and why this provides an array of opportunities for good. I know this sounds rather counter-intuitive, and understand why when bad things happen to good people it can become a source of frustration and helplessness, but these reactions ...

Stay Informed. Stay Active.

We speculate that unlike the consciousness raising on gun control following the Newtown Massacre, which petered out along partisan lines since the National Rifle Association owns most of the U.S. Congress, this singular event in Ferguson will succeed in merging the message with the messenger at just the right moment. It has brought about a laser-focus on the rotten mass of shameful, bankrupt, coercive, and inhumane systems, forcing elected officials, conservative and liberal alike, to say, wait a damn minute.  "The eyes of the nation and the world are watching Ferguson right now. The world is watching because the issues ...
