Hail the Passing of a Paranoid Homophobe

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State noted this week the death of 90-year-old Tim LaHaye, a name known and condemned by everyone who believes in equality rights. Like me, you may remember his blockbuster Left Behind series of prophecies or other books he wrote as founder of Liberty University's Tim LaHaye School of Prophecy. An avowed dominionist christianist, the series served to brand him forever as homophobia personified and as the darling of the Religious Right. LaHaye earned millions of dollars trying to smash every argument for equal rights for women and LGBT people. Americans United featured a quote from LaHaye's 1977 Understanding The Male ...

Barney Frank Nails the First Amendment Defense Act

The suspect "First Amendment Defense Act" (FADA) that is floating through Congress sustained its most damning criticism yesterday from former House Representative Barney Frank. You can read his full statement here; or watch some video. The GOP-sponsored bill attempts, with its ridiculous title, to legislate the protection of executives at any entity receiving taxpayer funding (a business, school, hospital, non-profit organization, etc.) to lawfully discriminate against LGBT people, and unmarried heterosexual couples, based solely on their personally held religious views. Yeah, you read that right. Legalized discrimination. Frank served in Congress (1981-2013) and is openly gay and married. He eviscerated the bill as ...

How are you celebrating Religious Freedom Day?

The idea of religious freedom was conceived as a shield protecting against government overreach when it comes to religious matters. All Americans, be they Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, and so on, should have the freedom to practice their faith or worldview free from burdensome government regulation or required participation; faith and other individual thoughts are private waters that government shall not wade in except in extreme circumstances. Religious freedom by its nature must include freedom FROM religion to maintain its integrity as a concept. We see efforts by Religious Right groups and the US Catholic bishops to take ...

The Implosion WILL Be Televised

by KAZ Vorpal Flickr/creative commons

The very depravity of what's now pouring from their mouths is doing all the work for us. Back from traveling, I am fully enjoying how US Republicans have answered my prayers, and then some. The self-immolation of their influence occurs hourly now, and I've got the marshmallows. The long-ago right wing has been completely co-opted by the political religious right. These fake christianist profiteers want to destroy our democracy to speed their promised white, male christian sharia. They are motivated by greed, not faith, to protect the fortunes of an entitled elite. They relish the idea of constitutional crises and ...

No More Right Wing, Just Religious Right

"It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it."

That quote is from 1981, and its prescience comes from an unlikely source: evangelical superstar Billy Graham. No one was or is more embedded in the religious fundamentalist culture, but even he foresaw the coming perversion of religious-based politics. Through this summer, I have been equating the religious right with the GOP because every Republican elected and appointed official has by now been completely co-opted by their science-denying, punishing, and harmful agenda. ...

The Sexual Confusion of the Religious Right

In connection with our campaign to #VoteOutTheReligiousRight, I wrote The Christian Fundamentalist's Erotic Dream to help pull the sheets off of the perverted sexuality at the root of the religious right's distorted politics, their utter mendacity. In that post, I quoted Jeff Sharlet, author of The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, who sums this up succinctly. "[T]he erotic dream of Amreican fundamentalism is a restoration of a cleansing of impurity, a nation without sin, an empire of the personal as political . . . "Today’s Christian conservatives define themselves as apart from the world, and ...

Did Ted Cruz Mess With Your Church?

Senator Ted Cruz Flickr/creative commons

Today, we're searching for data on just how many churches openly violated their tax-exempt status yesterday by reading from their pulpits a sermon written and sent to them by Senator Ted Cruz to rally support for a government shutdown to defund *Planned Parenthood. On the left, we are seriously questioning the right of religious organizations to maintain their taxpayer subsidies for preaching hate and discrimination. On the right, we hear protests against churches preaching about and facilitating sanctuary cities protecting undocumented immigrants. But, no matter where you stand, few actions so clearly define the bankruptcy of church-state ...

Media Finally Discovering Dominionism and How It’s Driving the Religious Right

This summer for me began when I decided to turn up the heat up with the goal to #VoteOutTheReligiousRight (complete index here). Though the number of evangelicals has been declining, the influence of the religious right, personified by so many of our politicians past and present, is consuming our government like a flesh-eating disease. As we passively allow church-state separation to crumble, all of us are complicit in bringing about christian sharia in the USA. In order to disqualify the religious right from public service we have to understand Read More

Combatting the Infection of the Religious Right

IMG_1513

"[Y]ou’re not able to see somebody else as a human being,"

Some may predict that the influence of the religious right is waning as the number of Americans identifying as evangelicals declines, but that misunderstands and underestimates the festering infection of their ideas, already in full flower. You can be an secularist but your world is still affected by the disease of fundamentalist thinking that has made and continues to make a deep impression on our laws and policies. The rubric of religious freedom has been fully distorted to protect racial bigotry and legalize discrimination. President Obama Read More

Is the End Game for the Religious Right Really a Civil War? (Part 2 of 2)

Poster by Steve Rhodes Flickr/creativecommons

"[G]ay rights issue has reached an unprecedented 'level of intensity' and put the country on the brink of conflict . . . Talk about a Civil War, we could have another one over this.

. . . If the Supreme Court strikes down the state bans and states across the country fail to convene “a state constitutional convention to re-examine the Constitution . . . we’re going to see a general collapse in the next decade or two.”

-- Foucs On The Family's James Dobson:

In Part 1, yesterday, I posed the question, ...
