ETC, New Education and Advocacy Organization for DC Trans Community

If you fall, you get up and try again. If you have the drive, stamina, and dedication of one Ms. Earline Budd you don't let anyone or anything stand in your way. The legions of trans people and their families that she has served quietly but fiercely for the last 20 years refer to her reverently as "Ms. Budd." She is best known as the driving force behind DC's annual Transgender Day of Remembrance that honors the lives of people who die all to frequently just because they were standing in their truth. She's also widely known for the organization she ...

Good Morning, America! (Part 2)

Editor's Note: Be sure to check out Part 1 where Moses reacted to the news of open service for transgender people. Below is Part 2, Moses' direct response to my originating post, Facing Military Reality, which cited the evil of war as the the background to our noble support our troops and the new policy of transgender service in the military.

I agree. Despite the fact that transgender folks have been given a green light to serve openly in the military, there will still be many obstacles hindering full integration, just like freeing slaves did not erase racism ...

Good Morning, America! (Part 1)

Editor's note: I recently addressed the new policy allowing transgender people to serve in the military as a step back a bit to consider the military is a large, violent, and oppressive system in dire need of new direction, inclusive as it may be. My good friend, Moses, at the same time, offersed his take on the new policy, Good Mornight, America (Part 1), below. In Part 2 of his post, Moses responds directly to my initial post which attempted to separate love for our troops and the evil of war.

  On June 30, 2016 Defense Secretary Ashton B. ...

Where Have All The Transgender People Gone?

The announcement of open service for transgender troops happens to coincide with the release of new Williams Institute report showing that the number of adults identifying as transgender in the US has doubled in the last 5 years to 0.6%. Since traveling the country over the last decade to interact and work with trans activists, I learned one important fact that indicates this new Williams Institute estimate is far, far too low. The transgender people that make themselves highly visible as a political act, in fact, represent a small handful. Consider how many lesbian, gay, and bisexual people there are ...

Weekend Convo: Intersex and Trans Children Counter Transmisogyny

Misogyny is the objectification, discrimination, and violence and murder against women. Transmisogyny is a particularly virulent type of misogyny that is directed solely at girls and women who currently identify or previously identified as trans. There are two realities that will, over time, undermine this behavior but that will not, sadly, be soon enough to stem the rising tide of violence and murder of trans women, especially among people of color. These two realities will eventually help dismantle transmisogyny even though it is entirely about the misogynist's emotional, irrational reaction to their own deep-seated fears and sexual insecurity. Because transmisogyny has no intellectual basis, it cannot be talked ...

Largest U.S. Trans Survey to Launch on August 19

At last count, 40-60% of trans people have attempted suicide compared to 1.6% of the general population. Isn't it time you did something to help? Updating the ground-breaking 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, Injustice At Every Turn, conducted jointly by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, the new 2015 U.S. Trans Survey is about to launch this month on August 19 (under the aegis of the National Center for Transgender Equality). Using data from 6,400 participants, the meta-findings of the earlier survey, which has been cited by ...

What do you think after watching the video below? If you are trans or gender-non conforming or gender fluid, what was your childhood like? How did we break free of society's false expectations? Trans Issues That Matter

Chase Strangio is a Staff Attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, who yesterday penned an important article, Call Her Caitlyn But Then Let's Move on to the Issues Affecting the Trans Community. "To tell Caitlyn’s story with care is to demand justice for trans people." Telling [Jenner's] story with care means using the right name and pronoun, but it also means highlighting the extent to which it is not the typical trans story. Her story can only be told by also telling the stories of the trans people who are struggling to survive systemic discrimination. Caitlyn Jenner has definitely ...

Op-Ed: Culturally Inept Policing Schools Criminals

Photo by Adam Fagen Flickr/creative commons

In our grassroots work in Washington, DC, 3 years ago, we discovered a sad reality that persists. Police training and code, cultural competency training, with additional Special Orders pertaining to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) people, and the country's most long-standing and extensive human rights protections for the LGBT community were not enough to rid the police force of homophobes and transphobes. While there are many good policemen, this substantial group cannot not be persuaded to put their personal feelings second to enforcing the law, actually doing their jobs. In fact, some are perpetrators of crimes against the communities they were assigned ...

Getting Untied Is A Mistake

"Luminarium" Sculpture by Alan Parkinson, UN Geneva, Switzerland Flickr/creative commons

Some recent memes have left me wondering: Are certain leaders consciously uncoupling from some of our core beliefs that motivate our activism in the first place? For example, it seems to me that it would be much better if the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) community fights for all of the objectives of the immigration movement, as we have done in the past. However clear it is that LGBT people suffer disproportionally in all matters of immigration, our advocacy must be inclusive of the suffering of all people, LGBT and straight conjoined, in order to attack directly the underlying causes ...
