Watch: Jeff Sharlet on The Family, the Huge, Secret Cult Driving the Religious Right

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 3.42.52 PM“American power worldwide, unfettered capitalism, no unions, no programs to help poor people, all with this idea that godly, powerful, rich men should get as many resources as possible personally and they should just privately help everyone else.” (Rachel Maddow’s impression of The Family after reading one of Jeff Sharlet‘s definitive, investigative books on the organization, The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power (2009) and C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy (2011) Jeff Sharlet.

This continues our month-long series on the The Family (aka The Fellowship), an American fundamentalist cult which secretly infiltrates the upper echelons of the U.S. government and many countries worldwide. Family members personify Dominionism, a political and religious philosophy that calls for the end of the rule of law and the ascendancy of (their version of) god’s law. This is the philosophy driving the agenda of the religious right.

We have published a starting list of current and former U.S. senators, representatives, congressmen, judges, governors, attorneys general, and even presidents who are card-carrying members who should be forced, or should have been forced, to resign.

Fortunately, for those of us who want to retain our democracy, these lawmakers have also left a tidy package of ethical and financial violations that can and should be used to force their resignations, en masse. Their allegiance to this cult supersedes and nullifies their oaths of office, and it’s why they deny science and disregard the rights of women, the poor, people of color, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans folk, as their voting records attest to.

We hold in our hands, today, at this moment, the power to send these people home for their enormous conflict of interest. In 1816, the largest purge of Congress took place, also because of a conflict of interest, when 70% of incumbents in the House of Representatives were sent packing. We can do the same before the 2016 elections. Will you join us in ending this assault on democracy?
