A Further Introduction to the Cult Known as The Family or The Fellowship

“The love of power–world changing power, messianic power–is not an American invention; but our civil religion, the belief that such a move can coexist peacefully with both God and democracy is.” [Jeff SharletThe Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power (2009)]

Following up my related posts last week (linked below), here is the first in a promised series of short articles attempting a rounded introduction to The Family (aka The Fellowship) in the form of Opinion-Editorials for educational purposes. I crave your feedback and participation.

If you are not already familiar with The Family or either of Jeff Sharlet‘s definitive investigative books (The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power in 2009, and C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy in 2011),  you would probably be shocked by this question:

What if I told you about a large, established, American, secret, christianist cult that operates internationally to make profits for its adherents — legions of U.S. Senators, Representatives, Governors, Cabinet Secretaries, judges, military leaders of the highest rank, attorneys generals, and, yes, even presidents, who come disguised as your public servants otherwise sworn to serve you and the instruments of your democracy rather than their own greed and religious zealotry?

In studying The Family for the last 5 years, I had to first learn about American dominionism so that’s were this series starts because The Family is the dominionist cult described in the question above. Dominionism is a political and religious philosophy that calls for the end of the rule of law to be replaced by (a skewered version of) god’s law. Another one of these dominionist cults recently made the news, The Duggar Family’s Quivverful, which leads its members to the hyper-production of christian soldiers to make sure this goal becomes a reality (hence the title of their reality show, “19 and Counting).”

It’s no reality show, though. This is reality, and it is nothing short of christian sharia, and we have to take responsibility for allowing dominionists to whittle away at our laws by their wholesale dismissal of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights in favor of their suspect religious teachings. Once we start taking full responsibility for allowing this recklessness to go this far, we will both understand the gravity of the question above and be able to do something about it.

Continues tomorrow . . .
