The Sexual Freedom Project: The Glass Closet

(También en Español)

What issues in your own family that are “off limits” in terms of discussion due to past or present circumstances? Does your family make you live in a glass closet, where everyone knows about your sexual orientation and/or gender identity but just are unwilling to talk about it?  Do you wish your family was more comfortable talking about these tender issues?

Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX t-shirt to thank you.

The Sexual Freedom Project: Do your own research

The level of sex education in America’s schools is impartial at best and at its worst calls for abstinence. What has been your experience?

Many people believe that the responsibility for sex education lies with your parents. How has the worked for you?

The bottom line makes you responsible for your own sex ed, researching those aspects that teachers, parents, and even your peers left out. There are plenty of good sources of sex ed on the Internet (and in your local library), including sites especially for teens such as teen source, Scarleteen, and sexetc, so you don’t need to be left in the dark.

What have you done to complete your sex education?

If you believe is sexual freedom, then sex ed is an important tool for you.

Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX t-shirt to thank you.

The Sexual Freedom Project: Discussing Polyamory

Polyamory, loving more than one partner, is finally getting the exposure it needs in the media and elsewhere. These are natural relationships based on shared values and deserve just as much respect as any other relationship. This may not be your cup of tea but that doesn’t mean you are incapable of recognizing and respecting relationships that are different from your own.

Consider this: monogamy, and the rigid jealousy with which it is partnered, has long been the cause of so many broken families, needlessly, because of a general misunderstanding of what fidelity is all about. It’s not about “cheating” because whom are you cheating on, yourself or your objecting partner? Most people don’t stray because they are afraid, their desire for safety and stability trumping their true desires.

Fidelity is about reciprocal loyalty, and as long as that is in place, everyone, whether married or not, should be free to experience their sexuality as they wish, without canceling out their fidelity to their committed partner or to their new committed partners. This expression of fidelity, giving your partner the freedom to express their desires however they choose, actually strengthens all relationships to the extent they are open and honest. Fidelity by definition accepts the notion that fidelity can exist within a multitude of relationships, sexual or not.

Cutting off your sexuality just because you are in a committed relationship doesn’t add up for those who wish to expand their sexual horizons. This is not to say that polyamory doesn’t come with many challenges, but they always lead to self-understanding, mutual understanding, and, ultimately, self-mastery.

Rounding Out for Independence Day Weekend: 7-minute Video Montage

Closing out a good weekend of reflection, remembering the once cherished America that valued its diversity born of immigration, yearning for the end of hate worldwide. As we wrote over the weekend, the puritans are responsible for the corporatized theocratic fundamentalism today eating away America and trouble spots across the globe; and, how and why sexual freedom is the bedrock of all freedoms and is worth fighting for.

So here’s our little celebration — a montage of some of our best Sexual Freedom Project videos of the last few years.

We send each contributor one of our prized VenusPlusX T-shirts (with our slogan: Sexual Freedom, You Are Born With It) when they send us a video (or an essay, work of art, etc.) expressing what sexual freedom means, or means to them. So get out your phone or video camera and let us hear from you!

This video runs 7:18 minutes. For more videos, click here.

The Sexual Freedom Project: Sex for Disabled People

We’re featuring this video today to remind people to consider the sexual freedom of handicapped people. It contains some graphic images that some may find disturbing so viewer discretion is advised.

It may be news to some but disabled people have the same need for sexual freedom as everyone else but often with more barriers, such as mobility or the fact that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, HIV+, or favor some form of kink. A disabled person may require special assistance or arrangements, as well as caregivers who approve of and are willing to facilitate any sexual encounters. Meeting the sexual needs of disabled people is improved with the rise of more sex workers devoted to special needs clientele.

What role does society have in ensuring that disabled people can express their sexual freedom? The Netherlands have special financial provisions, funding for paid sexual encounters up to 12 times a year. Should other countries do the same? What other unique or creative approaches could be taken to ensure that sexual freedom can be realized by everyone, despite disability?

Let us know what you think. Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts on these topics. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX t-shirt to thank you.

TRANSCRIPT

All organisms that are capable of sentience deserve our consideration. Anything that’s capable of appreciating the spectrum between well-being and suffering deserves our moral consideration. Yeah, I feel like being open and honest with people who are a part of your life or who have [been] could be affected by your sexuality, I think is really important. We have to break down a lot of the taboos that circulate around sex. So, people can’t feel like engaging in something merely out of self-interest, or because there’s no long-term benefit from doing it, ghat they should feel guilty for that sort of thing. They shouldn’t…but there are a lot of forces in our society I would point out, religious (laughs) sources that make people feel like they should feel guilty for doing what they find pleasurable. This is an untenable position it seems to me. If everyone’s informed and consenting, then there’s nothing wrong with any form of sex in my opinion, and people need to feel that way too, I think. And they’ll be happier and healthier for it.

The Sexual Freedom Project: Everyone’s Different

Young people more and more are rejecting the social construct of male and female in favor of gender neutral attitudes.

Many queer youth are neither gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans, and call themselves gender queer, or intergender, or don’t label themselves at all.

Dispensing with, breaking free of, traditional male and female roles allows each of us to be free to find our own unique expression, or non-expression, of our birth assigned gender.

A post-gender world is a real thing, and is worth striving for so that each child is born is free from cultural “norms” that otherwise restrict growth and creativity.

Philo’s Manifesto, from the award-winning book, Venus Plus X, that inspired our name, discusses the possibilities, as does our own Manifesto for The New Age of Sexual Freedom

We would like to know what you think. How do you see the changing roles for males and females and those in between? Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts on these topics. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX t-shirt to thank you.

TRANSCRIPT

I think.. society’s view of, of the whole male/female thing is really outdated. I get in conversations with friends about this all the time. Like uh, how men are supposed to do ‘this’ and women are supposed to do ‘this’ and they really put emphasis on men being masculine and doing manly things like mechanic work, and stuff like that, And women doing gardening and cooking and it’s not like that, you know America is progressing and.. people take on different roles and, especially in the LGBT community, I mean it just, it doesn’t apply. I mean you can’t just put one person into a specific mold and expect everyone to be the same. Just, people aren’t designed that way. So I think uh, people really need to broaden their horizons and uh, open up to uh, different perspectives. How people, people operate, I mean, everyone’s different.

The Sexual Freedom Project: ‘Escorting’ v. ‘Prostitution’

We’re talking another look at this Sexual Freedom Project video in light of our recent post, “Voluntary sex work is destined to evolve into a legitimate Sexual Healing Industry.” Regardless of what money exchanges whose hands, sex work is a legitimate part of our culture in that it is, with the exception of forced prostitution, an expression of comfort and love however foreign that idea may sound to some people.

What do you think?

Is there a difference between between what “escorts” are paid to do, and what “prostitutes” are paid to do?

Is sex work labeled differently depending upon the socioeconomic status of the person performing it? Or the status of the person paying the sex worker?

Why do legal authorities round up prostitutes who work on the streets, while looking the other way when it comes to escorts who find their clients online and in other invisible ways? Is this a legitimate distinction or just another form of discrimination based on wealth and status?

Again, let us know what you think. Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts on this and other topics that people like you have recorded for the Sexual Freedom Project. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX t-shirt to thank you.
