Good Morning, America! (Part 2)

Editor's Note: Be sure to check out Part 1 where Moses reacted to the news of open service for transgender people. Below is Part 2, Moses' direct response to my originating post, Facing Military Reality, which cited the evil of war as the the background to our noble support our troops and the new policy of transgender service in the military.

I agree. Despite the fact that transgender folks have been given a green light to serve openly in the military, there will still be many obstacles hindering full integration, just like freeing slaves did not erase racism ...

Good Morning, America! (Part 1)

Editor's note: I recently addressed the new policy allowing transgender people to serve in the military as a step back a bit to consider the military is a large, violent, and oppressive system in dire need of new direction, inclusive as it may be. My good friend, Moses, at the same time, offersed his take on the new policy, Good Mornight, America (Part 1), below. In Part 2 of his post, Moses responds directly to my initial post which attempted to separate love for our troops and the evil of war.

  On June 30, 2016 Defense Secretary Ashton B. ...

Facing Military Reality

It's official: Transgender people will serve openly in the US armed forces. While this can be considered a step forward toward full acceptance and protection of transgender people in our culture and human rights in general, we are still very, very far from that. On top of that, it's still important to remember that our armed services only "further the violence of one of the central institutions of global oppression." Yesterday's excellent Op-Ed at Truth-Out.org, "Transgender Troops" Should Be An Oxymoron, is required reading for every LGBT activist because it pinpoints the cause of the right-wing shift of our biggest ...

"Out of the chaos of this prolonged moment and inside the shell of the old system, a new culture, a new kind of politics, a new kind of governance is being born right before our eyes. Call it what you want. But call it something. Stop pretending it’s not happening." (Tom Engelhardt of The Nation Institute and TomDispatch.com)

Below are some highlights from Engehardt's 5 Hallmarks of the New American Order, republished in The Nation magazine, and I urge you to not only read the entire article but print it out and post ...

Part 2: Take Heart, Evidence Pouring In Hourly

Yesterday, I revisited my pre-election theory that progressives and all non-Republicans will see the greater good of a Republican takeover of the Senate and their increased footprint in the House. And I promised to riff on a few memes to substantiate that soon after. (Part 1 here.) There's nothing to fear since these election results are actually bringing about the best time in history to put these special interest jokers on full display and in sharper relief so that everyone, at least more and more people, can see them for who they really are and then ...

The Sexual Freedom Project: The Weight of Tradition

(También en Español) What does repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the US military mean to you? To society-at-large? Now lesbian and gay soldiers can serve openly, but what about transgender soldiers as well? Why have lawmakers and the media paid more attention to homophobia to the exclusion of transphobia? How big a role do you think weight of tradition plays in restricting sexual freedom? Can cultural taboos change? How can parents, teachers, and community leaders help create new traditions that allow all of us to be more expressive of who we are? Your input is needed! Please write to us, ...

The Sexual Freedom Project: Former US Air Force Female Soldier

(También en Español) Though the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell was a giant step forward, the fact remains that there is still a long way to go in terms of equal rights in the military for women, in the gay community, and especially in the trans community. How do you feel about transgender Americans being excluded from the DADT repeal? Make a video, write a poem, song, or an essay — or even create an original work of art — and express your thoughts. If we feature your contribution on the site, we will send you a free VenusPlusX ...

The Sexual Freedom Project: Telling my dad that I am gay-LIVE

Don't Ask, Don't Tell takes effect this week, so we are sharing this viral video that's reached TV and over 3 million people on YouTube. An active service member calls his Dad in Alabama from where he's stationed in Germany to tell him he's gay, and his father responded in a way that's been very moving. What's your coming out story? And what were the reactions of your families and friends? Every coming out is its own revolutionary act, and some people say they come out to a further degree on a daily basis. Are you in the military now and seeing ...
