ETC, New Education and Advocacy Organization for DC Trans Community

Left to right back row: Jeri Hughes, Kylar Broadus, and David Mariner; right to left front row: Earline Budd, Dr. Patricia Hawkins and Roxanne Jackson

If you fall, you get up and try again. If you have the drive, stamina, and dedication of one Ms. Earline Budd you don't let anyone or anything stand in your way. The legions of trans people and their families that she has served quietly but fiercely for the last 20 years refer to her reverently as "Ms. Budd." She is best known as the driving force behind DC's annual Transgender Day of Remembrance that honors the lives of people who die all to frequently just because they were standing in their truth. She's also widely known for the organization she ...

Victoria Woodhull was the first woman nominated to be US President

Victoria Woodhull

This very day, Hillary Clinton will become the first woman nominated to be US President (by a major party). So this is a very appropriate time to remind everyone of her predecessor, Victoria Woodhull. Woodhull's storied career, public service, and style of activism have always been near and dear to VenusPlusX especially because she was a sex futurist of unparalleled accomplishment. Unconventional even among the suffragettes she led, Woodhull was nominated by the Equal Rights Party in 1872. As soon as that happened she was excoriated in the press for colorful past and her belief in free love. Two hundred years ago (and ...

July 4: The Lonely Road of Reconciliation

July 4 can be a good time for reflection, and it seems that every year, we have had something to say for the holiday, such as: religion, real and fake; an explanation of why sexual freedom is the bedrock of all freedoms; and, a 7-minute video montage of street interviews asking, "What Does Sexual Freedom Mean To You?" Last year, though, I took a different approach, tied in with my life-long search for answers to the cratering of modern civilization that we are witnessing today. While I believe that America may be the world’s best hope for universal human rights ...

#GagOnIt

This sculpture, "Non-Violence" (a.k.a. "The Knotted Gun"), by Fredrik Reuterswärd, was a gift from the Government of Luxembourg to the United Nations.

The "Gays Against Guns" (GAG) campaign received a jumpstart at Sunday's NYC Pride Parade and elsewhere in the country. On command, these marchers stopped chanting, and laid down on the pavement in a "die-in," a dramatic exclamation driving home the point. The GAG campaign emerged following the Orlando massacre at a gay night club two weeks ago, and mirrors the sit-in for gun control by heroic democrats literally sitting down on the floor of the US House of Representatives, and many coordinated civil actions across the country for today's National Day of Action Against Gun Violence. Fifty years ago as ...

We were hacked!

5838008329_58f3d7713d_z

The cause of sexual freedom was dealt a blow last month when our website was hacked, to pieces. Everything is back together now, and it's full steam ahead, thanks to a new, impregnable fence around our data. Sexual freedom is the bedrock of all freedoms because achievement of this penultimate freedom equates to full, universal personal sovereignty, agency over our bodies, and the opportunity for global peace. Here's our manifesto. Let's get busy. I'm now gearing up for NetrootsConnect and NetrootsNation 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri, July 13-17, and hoping to be able to connect and reconnect with local social and ...

How are you celebrating Religious Freedom Day?

by Michael Swan
Flickr/creativecommons

The idea of religious freedom was conceived as a shield protecting against government overreach when it comes to religious matters. All Americans, be they Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, and so on, should have the freedom to practice their faith or worldview free from burdensome government regulation or required participation; faith and other individual thoughts are private waters that government shall not wade in except in extreme circumstances. Religious freedom by its nature must include freedom FROM religion to maintain its integrity as a concept. We see efforts by Religious Right groups and the US Catholic bishops to take ...

A Lightening Strike Heard Around The World

"Not everything that is faced can be chaged; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." — James Baldwin (1924 – 1987) American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic

Meditation this weekend on Michael Brown and the birth of the BlackLivesMatter movement led me to re-examine my published thoughts from a year ago.

Follow The Money To Ferguson Institutionalized racism, money, greed, and special interests are what makes brown and black young men primary targets and victims, and it is being financed by your hard-earned tax-dollars. (More . . .)

#VoteOutTheReligiousRight

by Rachel Titiriga

#VoteOutTheReligiousRight Will you help #VoteOutTheReligious Right? As we fight for human rights, environment, and safe immigration, we have at hand a way to remove a large body of the political opposition. The underlying religious cults and alliances of the political religious right are, or should be, crystal clear most people by now. Their adherents no longer say or do anything to hide it, frequently demonstrating that their religious alliances supersede, actually nullify, all of the oaths of office they made upon entering public life. As Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia recently reminded us, “I think the main fight is to dissuade Americans from what ...

The Big Lie: The National Prayer Breakfast (Part 2 of 2)

by Rymer Bruiring Flickr/creative commons

"At the 1990 National Prayer Breakfast, President George H.W. Bush praised [Family leader] Doug Coe for what he described as 'quiet diplomacy, I wouldn't say secret diplomacy.' Bush was apparently ignorant of one of the nation's oldest laws, the Logan Act which forbids private citizens to do just that lest foreign policy slip out of democratic control."

[The Family cult is . . . ] "Dismissed as 'civil religion' by observers who know it only by the National Prayer Breakfast's annual broadcast on C-Span, the Family's long-term project of a worldwide government under ...
